Kick the Can

Matthew R. Callies

In the dusk, the can lies still,
A forgotten treasure, time to fill.
Children gather, wild and free,
Eyes aglow with mystery.

One stands guard, the others flee,
Hiding in shadows, as silent as can be.
The game is simple, but the stakes are high—
A can to kick, or time to hide.

With a shout, the chase begins,
Laughter echoes, the thrill spins.
One by one, they race and dart,
A secret game that warms the heart.

Then—clang! The can is kicked away,
A signal loud for those who play.
The chase resumes, the danger near,
But all is joy, no trace of fear.

At last, the can is found once more,
The game's not done, it begs for more.
Under the moon, the children run,
Until the game is lost to none.
