Election Time is here again with promises galore,
Bogus Smiles and Perfect Hair, With Leaflets through the door.
Vote for me for a Better Life,
The usual Battle Hymn,
The Utopian Dream is up ahead,
The Day we get to Win.
Your Tax to High? We’ll bring it down,
With Cost of Living fine,
The N.H.S. is safe with us,
And Water into Wine.
Bring your Babies, We’ll kiss some Heads,
All Cliches we adopt,
We Love ‘Adele’ for it gives us ‘Gred’,
Our Falsity never stops.
So give a Thought this Polling Day,
Those Pledges you’ll Hear and See,
The same old Guff and Oily Words ,
What Price Democracy?

- Comment from author about the poem: Written when the U.K. Election kicked Off in July. One word all Politicians use and that’s ‘Change’. But does anything really Change for the Man / Women on the Street?

Promises, promises - and the answer to your very last comments question: rarely. But your National Health Service began just after the war in 1948 (legislation earlier). In the late seventies I was able to obtain a three year tertiary full time education there, fees paid and a healthy living allowance provided.
Of course, the NHS has by all accounts been stuffed by subsequent right wing governments and I suspect Uni education is anything but free....
Well written and expressed
i agree with your message - which is loud and clear - false promises are made, which are rarely honored - and this applies to every place that holds elections
Thanks . We are giving Positive Pledges, and when the Party Get In ; the Rug is pulled from under us all.
yes, that happens all the time unfortunately.
one can only hope that a day will come when things will change..
Wonderful piece... astonishing in its rawness and directness. My personal preference is accessible poems unburdened by ritualistic use of obtuse imagery. This poem ticked all boxes and of course the theme is universal and relatable in all democracy.,.psst.. perhaps hypocrisy
I know what you mean by ‘Obtuse Imagery’ , theres Nothing worse than reading a Poem and thinking ‘What was that about’.
