Alone
undaunted
unparalleled
driving into crystal black night
wanting to forget
all the mistakes
that drove her away,
remembering
the highs, the lows, and all
the bad little gambles
that I made
to keep her coming back
to new surprises.
She stayed on
longer than I thought
but I knew
she wasn’t really there
not like before
like the times
in the poppy fields
where we rolled around
at dusk
the sun setting
the dust
settling
and the birds
singing
only
to our hearts.
And down by the brook
underneath the forest canopies
where the path went forever
walking
hand in hand
moment in moment,
time stopped
and we were in it.
The river ran deep
and in between,
up the hill,
and back down again,
regaining some of the energy
that had been lost
but only for a moment
then she parted again
gradually then quickly,
off to another place
so far away
I could barely see her
anymore
and by that time
it was all
together too late
she was gone.
But sometimes like tonight
she still finds me
out here
driving in the rain
alone.
The funny part about it
is that
I let her.
