Burning

sayyidah

I am burning up from the inside

I'm acidic and impolite

But I’d rather twist the knife you kill me with than let you out of sight

My weather-beaten heart, beating.

Fast then slow then fast

And now I’ve forgotten all those who didn’t last.

I have not been this conscious, as I am now, in the past.

Though I may have been, and might still be, ignorant to my heart

There’s no denying

This time I'm lying,

When I say “We’re better apart.”

I am burning up from the inside

I’m bitter and unforgiving in this light

I have unkept promises and sins done out of spite

But your soul, it’s seen, all of me,

All of which I have tried to hide

All the bitter, all the bad, all the words I couldn’t write.

You’ve seen it all and chose to stay, despite.

I’m burning up from the inside.

And you’re the cold that enters my lungs

My mouth, aflame. anger’s ignite

And you’re winter on my tongue.
