Sight Seeing with Mellan

GenXer Shamrocker ☘️

Meara can only imagine where Mellan will take her. She’s so use to things being planned that she’s relieved for once to have a detour. Unexpected surprises is what it’s all about! No matter where she ends up, she’s hopeful it will all work out. “Were you aware Meara, that the Coolidge family started a cheese factory?” “No.” Meara replies; I knew he had a home here.” “Is that where you’re taking me?” “Just conversation Meara.” “There’s a spot around here where I bring king.” “You know; to get away from the noise of the world.” “That sort of thing.” “I can’t imagine such a busy man as yourself ever needing to be alone.” Meara says with a smile to her tone. Mellan is not sure why he’s even taking Meara to Amherst Lake. He hasn’t let his guard down in years. He now thinks this could be a mistake. “I use to come up here to visit grandpa long before he passed away.” “That was long before I became a counselor for youth who lost their way.” Meara is taking in every last detail of Mellan. Noticing how there’s a bit of mystery to this man. “Enough about me Meara.” “What made you a romance writer?” “Just a hobby?” “Or do you enjoy trying to make the world a little brighter?” “Well Mellan if you must know.” “Some stories don’t work out this is true.” “But two hearts coming together and making it through the rough times?” “Not quitting when the going gets tough.” “That’s worth writing about I think?” “Don’t you?” “Okay; why Vermont?” He asks. “Beauty, history, and family.” “Does that not qualify as romance?” Mellan is taking in specific details of Meara. He wonders why he dare try to compare her. Women like her simply don’t exist. Yet standing right beside him, here she is. King is familiar with the lake ahead. Mellan helps Meara out of the truck and is caught off guard by the sunset. For just a moment in time it’s like time disappears. All that matters is this moment right here. Sounds like the story belongs to these two; Am I right? Am I wrong? What’s a poet to do?

  • Comment from author about the poem: Fact I found online. “The Coolidge family founded a cheese factory in Plymouth Notch in 1890. It was renovated in early 1970’s and now produces cheese according to original formula.”

Good write GS. KP says: No need to go sightseeing, dear; just look at the sight of me, me, me!' lol. I must 'get my coat' and 'get out more', as the sayings go. I've had enough of staying indoors and looking at old trouts! heehee.
