Autumn Hues

laymariee

The leaves shift hues like emotions untold,

A crisp breeze cooling the heat between us.

But none of it matters—

Just being near you makes me understand your soul.

It was the car ride home,

Low vibrations of the road clashing with the sparks

When your shoulder brushed mine,

Met by the longing in your hazel eyes.

I forgot there was a world beyond us,

Only the fact that you drive me crazy.

Do you feel this too?

This pull, this fire, this madness?

The taste of you—

Forbidden, like a home I shouldn’t claim.

Yet I can’t leave the space I’ve already made within.

We’ve been stuck here before,

Three years of restraint, unsure glances.

Bound by lust, longing,

And something that isn’t hate—

A desire that makes you look better each time I see your face.

I say we should move on,

You say of course—we’ve done it all.

But somehow, we’re on our way home

From a night that should’ve stayed a “what if.”

We got lost again.

Craving.

Needing.

Yearning.

I hate you.

You hate me more.

But your eyes, your lips—

They strip me of control.

Yet those other four letters

Are more complicated than we’re looking for.

Instead, you say:

“I don’t want to jeopardize being in your life

By being stuck on a maybe that isn’t fate.”

So we made a pact:

No regrets, no promises.

A kiss to seal the night away,

Until we remember why we chose to hate each other in the first place.
