Mother

Nerrith

Once more the wind of sorrow blows,
And in that wind, the heartbreak grows
Where love and hate align.
For you, the one that should have stayed,
Yet left me there, a child betrayed,
Whose cries you couldn’t find.

That child within me still recoils,
As demons rise from ancient soils,
To haunt the quiet night.
You hid your own unspoken pain,
Yet let its force, unchecked remain,
For me alone to fight.

I cannot cast away the tears,
For through you I lived many years,
And still I bear the scars.
I hate you, yes, but understand
How pain can take a steady hand,
And steal away what’s ours.

I love you though, I still am torn,
By love and hate, which both are worn
In wounds I’ll never show.
I don’t forgive, but now I see,
The chains that bound you - now, like me,
And mourn what we both know.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A bit more on the nose, this one’s about generational trauma. You were never a good mother, but I understand why. It’s not your fault.

This poem beautifully captures the intricate dance of emotions that come with betrayal by a loved one. The juxtaposition of love and hate, and the acknowledgment of shared pain, creates a rich emotional landscape. The final stanza, in particular, underscores the complexity of healing and the difficulty of finding peace amid unresolved hurt. Hope I read that right.

Thank you! That’s exactly that, I’m glad the intended meaning came across. We often romanticise a yearning for resolution and closure, when in truth sometimes we just need to find peace that some wounds will never close.

“Some wounds will never close,” now that used to scare me heaps. Had some cuts from corals 🪸 diving and the took forever to heal. Other wounds are not perceivable in the same way, but the need for peace remains the same.

A beautifully written poem which i can connect with, love and hate being as powerful as each other even though they 2 sides to the same coin. It highlights that some pain will always be there, it is how we control and learn to live with it, that will eventually bring us peace, very enjoyable read.

We all do what we do for a reason but many do not understand us. Some haters for some love us for it but only we will know why. Poignant write About understanding
