Lady of The Night (Out of Need)

Lady of the Night. ( Out of need)

It's 4:00 on a cold morning and it's raining hard again.

The rain is lashing against my old misty windowpanes.

I can see halfway down the road under the streetlight.

There stands little Mary, one of the ladies of the night.

Little Mary will always be found there, come rain or shine.

Just trying to survive not really committing any crime.

Mary’s daughter she has left with a friend safely indoors.

Mary herself when on the street is never safe and secure.

Every night she rolls the dice and risks again being abused.

To make some old man happy in her red high heeled shoes.

As ladies of the night go, Mary appears reasonably cheap.

It keeps the old men curb crawling all the way up the street.

Every new customer another piece of her is taken by a man.

She is risking everything and putting her life in their hands.

All this danger and worry just to earn some money on the side.

To be able to pay some bills and feed and clothe her only child.

Try putting yourself in Mary's shoes, why not give it a try.

How far would you go, how far would you go to survive.

Next time you see Little Mary and you wish her ill feeling.

Remember she's doing her best and she is still a human being.

Survival is everything. If you have a child to feed, you wouldn’t hesitate if you couldn’t find another way to bring in the bread. Don’t judge others, show some compassion. Tabani, you have narrated this situation skillfully. It is a dangerous situation to contemplate, but survival overrules everything else. Wonderfully composed.

Wow! Putting yourself in other's shoes requires thoughtful intentionality and humility. That is so lacking in this world, but your poem shows it is not completely lacking. Indeed, this poem serves as a call to action to all who have open ears and hearts to hear and receive. Excellent poem Tobani! 🌹👏

This is terribly sad but ever so common and true .. I work a lot with sex workers (both male & female) & many have hearts of gold and would do anything to help someone else in need not to mention their own flesh and blood .. Excellent my friend .. Neville

How easily we look down upon others. We forget that we are all human beings, brothers and sisters. This poem brings to mind the poem by Willis Unseen company.. Forgive me for introducing this.
“The shadows lay along Broadway for was nearly twilight tide
And slowly there’re a lady fair was walking in her pride
Alone while she but viewlessly walked spirits at her side
Peace charmed the street beneath her feet on honor charmed the air
And all the astir, spoke kind of her and called her good as fair
For all God ever gave to her, she kept with chairy care
She kept with care, her beauty, rare from lovers, warm, and true
For heart was cold to all but gold and the rich came out to woe
But honored well are charms to sell if priests the selling do
Now walking, there is one more fair a slight girl, Lily, pale
And she had unseen company, which would make the spirit quail
Twix wanted and scorn she walked forlorn till nothing could avail
No mercy now can clear her brow from this world’s peace to pray
For as loves wild prayer dissolved in air, her woman’s heart gave away
But the sin forgiven by Christ in heaven, man that curse always”

Not sure why you did not list that as a poem on your page

I'm not aware enough of the game or personal circumstances to know why the hell she doesn't join a legal brothel, (if they exist in the UK).
                A painful write, Tob.

                • TobaniNataiella

Thank you for your feedback, as far as i aware they do not have legal brothels, USA does in places but they still have thousands of woman working the streets, there is no easy solution.

This is too deep a problem to debate here at the rate we are going. I'll just throw in what I have and leave it I think: Some, maybe all states in Australia have legal brothels: one of the Scandinavian countries has legalised brothels, but criminalised the male clients. But the whole situation IMHO, is far more problematic than any of that.

It's a tough gig, and from what I remember most need strong drugs to get through.
Street workers cope the most abuse, either from the client or the pimp, or both.
But who's to blame? Without the demand there would be no game.

Thank you for your feedback and i agree totally, it could end overnight, if Men were not willing to pay for it.

The first time we all ever worked at a job we didn’t like or couldn’t do witHout for lack of choice in a sense is prostituting ourself for need. Sometimes any real difference is quite blurred.

I love your recognition and sympathy for an often wrongly criticized group, just trying to survive like the rest of us. Very nice work.
