An Advent Walk

JD Boye

I love walking my dog this time of night.

It's dark and the air is cool and crisp.

But the holiday lights are up, and they break the darkness

like a galaxy of stars

breaking through a mist.

Then I turn a corner and sigh.

I see a neighbor's manger scene...

Virgin and Christ Child

with Joseph nearby.

Serene. Such a beautiful mein.

Alone with my thoughts, even my dog seems to sense my shift.

In the peacefulness of the moment I pause and pray.

Then my soul seems to lift

and we're quietly on our way.
