In which the Blackbird Ponders on the What and the Why

Kevin Hulme

‘What is our existence all about’?

Said the Blackbird to the Bee near-by,

‘For  what is the meaning of our daily strife’

‘The constant struggle, the trials of Life’

The Birth of our being and then to die’?

To which the Bee had no reply.

‘Why do we wander from Dawn till Dusk’?

He asked the Beetle with a sigh,

What reason is there from Day to Night’,

Some Grief, some Joy, the daily fight’,

The need of Answers for the What and Why’?

To which the Beetle had no reply.

‘Is there a maker that Governs all‘?

This to the Wise Owl with a pleading cry,

‘That created the Earth, the Moon and Stars’,

’Is there more to us than what we are’,

‘And all this World we occupy’?

In which the Wise Owl could not reply.

‘And do we Breathe anew after immanent Death’?

Now this to the Grasshopper and the Fly,

‘To live once more beyond the plane’,

‘Everlasting Peace above Sorrow and Pain,’

‘Perpetual Light in which we Rise’?

To which the Grasshopper and the Fly, could not reply.

‘Well maybe ‘Mankind’ with their Perception of Mind,’

‘Will have answers to all of the Mysteries I’ve laid,’

‘An Intellect above , every Creature you’ll find.’

‘To shed revelatory light where life’s darkness is made’.

But Ah dear reader , on the What and the Why,

As It’s ‘Mankind’ above all that could not reply.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Sometimes when I see Birds just sitting there , they seem to have a look as if to say, ‘There must be more to life than this’. ‘And maybe ‘Humans know’, and so wrong.

And we all think without a thought that we know so much and that much more than the rest of our neighbours. Superbly expressed! Liked and Faved 🙂
P.S. a curious that that we were kind of parallel thinking, my "lastest" post being about the "why and where" of things... 🙂

Wow, you’re quick of the mark, I’ve just sent it in. Yes you are so right, but I’ve always thought ‘Hyenas know the ‘Meaning of Life’ , that’s what they Laugh about.

A really good read, compared to nature we know very little about Survival and life, nicely written
