Drink In the Sunrise

Dan Williams

A basket full of light collected,

carefully stored for darker days sure to come.

You knew her then, you decided when

it was time to fiddle, to pick or strum.

How could you be so blind to plainly waved whiter flags

that signal how much has been dared?

Did you offer her roses before asking

if you could take her by the hand and lead her there?

Bring on the music, raise the Chablis, drink in the sunrise.

See her turned away so lovely face there in the mirror.

You know it well, but it might take you by surprise

to find your life no longer bettered like the time that you had near her.

You saw her balancing the different hurts

underneath the hat of love she used to wear;

she can no longer see you as the only light along her path,

leaving you standing adjacent to an always empty chair.

The cloud above you is dark sided but means no rain,

still it blocks the sunbeams plainly meant to warm her.

Letting her believe that life is not fooling her again;

you become only another approaching storm.

    Aahh' such is both love and life itself .. even the sadness here is overshadowed by those clouds of consummate longing .. Neville 💜👍

    A nicely written poem that connects with a lot of people, remembering moments and people, that might of been more than they turned out, really enjoyed the read. Thank you

    This one spoke to me with each stanza a great line, so many in fact that I looked forward to finding the next. (A basket full of light collected,, The entire second stanza, You saw her balancing the different hurts underneath the hat of love she used to wear) The whole poem is magnificent!!

    The "basket full of light" jumps out at me and stays aloft in the reading. So much fun when they get away that way.

    This is a wonderful poem and a wonderful story. Indeed, very relatable. "Bring on the music, raise the Chablis, drink in the sunrise"...this could be my mantra after a long night of reveling in poetic writing! 🤣 Seriously, Orchi's daftness aside (which is rubbing off on me), I absolutely love this line and the ending:

    "The cloud above you is dark sided but means no rain,

    still it blocks the sunbeams plainly meant to warm her.

    Letting her believe that life is not fooling her again;

    you become only another approaching storm."

    So very, very powerful...how one, despite meaning no harm (rain) can become simply another passing storm. The imagery there is rich, especially having been on a fourteener and having seen how seemingly innocent clouds can turn into passing storms. Wonderful, wonderful imagery that drives the point home. Well done, my friend! 🌹👏
