And the dying of the roses,
How pure they shall be;
For it is loneliness that drives the masses
For the streets of Baltimore are weary
And I am too ancient to move,
So many people frowning upon their destinies
So many people come and go
As the spirits rise to the ages
The lonely devils are on display
And power to the roses that feed these devils
I shall no longer vow in sin
For sin is the covering of the ages
I place my rose upon a planted cloth
A cloth that rages!
Oh Baltimore leave the roses be...
Oh Baltimore let the roses lie
Upon what planted cloth you dare to scheme?
For there are many cloths that linger...
For the streets of Baltimore are bloody
For the streets of Baltimore are raging!
Wet my cloth
And plant it upon my tears
For I've cried ten thousand rivers
Or more...
Dear Baltimore! Dear Baltimore!
Who loves you more?
For the children are crying
And Jesus is wearing a rag
That says,
WE SHALL OVERCOME!
How dare Martin Luther King speak his free speech
When all is well and done?
For Martin Luther King was a pimp
Yet I am bound...
Let the secrets lust themselves overboard!
For Baltimore has sunken over time
And I am willing to challenge these roses,
Let the roses fall where they may.
I see the blood of Baltimore
Dripping upon these tears
Lonely roses die on their own
And I am the artist within...
Let me find my peace of mind
All the time,
For these streets of Baltimore are broken
Yet I am bound.
For these streets of Baltimore are broken
And that's no lie.
For the streets of Baltimore are broken
And so am I.
WE SHALL OVERCOME!
WE SHALL OVERCOME!
And someday the sun
Will shine again...
My heart is your heart, of course.
And picket lines
And desperate women
And desperate men
And desperate hallways...
And desperate cats
And desperate dogs,
We are the prophets of slain!
So this is the American revolution!
I am the rose that sings,
Oh Baltimore!
Dear Baltimore!
For I am healed...
