When Fireworks Sound Like Bombs

Tristan Robert Lange

Sitting here on this dark year’s end,
I hope for a better new year.

For a year without fear I hope,
Stuck here at this dark year’s end,
A dying trend that I still pray

To a God who remains silent.
A year minus fear is my hope,
Hiding here in this dark year’s end
I am scared to even be here.

A desp’rate attempt, I still pray
To a God who speaks silence
While I’m here in this dark year’s end.
A new year sans fear is my hope;
I am scared to find myself here

Surrounded by blown out buildings,
I desp’rately attempt to pray
To a God forever silent
Throughout this awful, dark year’s end.
For a safe year—no fear—I hope;
I’m frightened to find myself here

In this God-forsaken war zone,
Surrounded by bombed out buildings,
I desperately cry and pray
To a distantly silent God
For a blessed year—no fear—I hope.
I’m death-scared to find myself here
Dreading death on this dark year’s end.

I cannot pretend I’m okay,
In this love-forsaken war zone.
I am not surprised that I pray
To a monstrously silent God
For the peaceful year that I hope.
Still, I’m scared to find myself here,
Stuck here at this dark year’s end;
I pray for a better new year.

          I echo the sentiments of this piece, i am not of religious thoughts, but i am always amazed that if there is one, why does he sit by and stay silent at all the suffering. Enjoyed the read as always. Happy New Year Tristan to you and all.

            Thank you Tobani! Indeed. For me this poem (and the question posed in my note) is less of a religious statement and more of a reflection on our own beliefs and actions. For me the question becomes (especially for those praying to God) why do we pray to God and yet do nothing to change how things are? Outside of God, we could look at society's fascination with heroes. Why do we look to superheroes to swoop in and do something, when we have the power to as well? A complex question, but one that lingers on either side of faith. Anywho, I really do thank you so much, my dear friend, for your time and engagement, as always. Happy new year to you and all as well. Meeting you has been one of the highlights! ❤️🙏

              As an atheist I have no answers except to say we should look for hope and better behaviour from those who cause all this mess and war. Happy New Year dearest Tristan .ay it be as special as you are. 🌹

              • Tristan Robert Lange

                You've got that right, dear Teddy...and, I'll take it one step further, we should all demand better from our leaders...and from ourselves. This mess is human made...regardless of belief systems...and we have to do better for our children and our planet. Of course, humans have such a great track record at that! Here's me holding my breath 😱 🤣 Anyway, thank you so much my dearest friend. As long as there are people like you in the world, there is hope that goodness still exists. I truly appreciate our artistic exchanges as well as our friendship. I wish you the warmest and brightest of new years. You are a blessing. May you be blessed! ❤️🤗

                  Bless you dear Tristan it really is down to humans, and what we strive to achieve and it's also pride, I'm not looking forward to the Trump administration just like the first round, we shouldn't need to pray but vote better. ❤️

                  • Tristan Robert Lange

                    Indeed. 💯 Or, if one prays, let their prayers dictate their actions. Otherwise, they're as useless as Trump's promises. That said, I am certain some people's actions are showing us their true prayers. 😱 Ah...humanity! It really is down to us, though. Well, now that we've solved that 🤣. Happy new year, my dear friend.Wishing you the very best! ❤️

                    I've not seen many revelatory cascades, etc. And as they say : 'Your last sentence: Form, etc is not a sentence we hear every day!' lol.

                      I wonder if the world just needs more vigilante crime fighters... any organized group is targeted, but an individual, not so much.

                      • Tristan Robert Lange

                        Not sure. All I know is, reflecting on what is going on in Ukraine and other places in the world, ignorance and silence aren\'t going to get things done, that is for sure. So, wonder, we must...and act, when it is in our power to do so. That is all we can do. Oh...that and write of course. 😉 Thank you so much for reading and commenting my friend. 🙏❤️

                          This poem went straight to my heart. I struggle with the concepts of living without fear and having a God who doesn't speak through silence. It seems that the foundation of human civilization incorporates fear as one of the mechanisms to wield control over the masses. When we combine that with a silent God we get a perfect recipe for sustained misunderstanding, stress and exploitation. I have seldom come across lines like "For a year without fear I hope" and "To a God who speaks silence" which speak so eloquently in brevity. Fantastic poem!

                            Indeed. I concur with you. 💯 Thank you so much for your deep and careful analysis of the poem. Always much appreciated my friend. ❤️🙏
