Edge of the Abyss

Dan Williams

Time as a pendulum whose error persists,

its arc slightly skewed and so swings

incrementally more towards the past

as if on slanted or unsteady ground,

will inevitably slow and stop,

leaning away from the future;

how have things gotten so far out of hand?

Willful blindness of the masses

lets this continue unperceived.

Lives proceed unaware of some looming chasm.

No light to be mined from this darkness

of perpetual filibustering of resolutions to change.

Hopeful aspirations thrown under the wheels of corruption,

civilization trampled under the hooves of pollution.

Earth deserves better, humans deserve reprisals,

rightly brinks on extinction on this planet.

This is not rebellion in some far-off land,

easy to compartmentalize;

you cannot look without seeing the width and span of it.

The mind of man is too easily

collectively mesmerized by material wealth.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Mere rantings of an alarmist? Ask yourself; do you believe the lunatics in Russia and China and North Korea can refrain from using their doomsday weapons indefinitely? That the is inexhaustible supply of potable water on this planet? That they will refrain from leveling the rainforest? That Montsanto will ever stop making plastic? That the animals will miss us even for a moment?

    I see no lunatic here, rather a man with a sober view of things, my friend! Well done on this very thought-provoking wake-up call Dan! ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ‘

    A haunting reminder of how close man is to destroying everything in it`s path, nicely worded

    A great poem/rant on the human situation. Population increase, technology, greed and a few other issues lie at the center here. Nicely done

    Not at all alarmist, a very realistic and powerfully capturing of the urgent and critical state of our world, highlighting the looming dangers of environmental destruction and human complacency. The imagery and metaphors you use evoke a sense of impending doom and the harsh reality we face. Heads up yโ€™all!

    "If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgement and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they."
