CARICATURE

Lily May Emerald

ANOTHER OCCASION,
ANOTHER TIME,
THE USUAL REASONS
FOR THE SAME OLD RHYME!

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN?
THAT LONG???
I'LL JUST SWEAR
THAT TIME RUSHES RIGHT BY!
(BUT WE REALLY DON'T CARE.)

NOW SAY THE RIGHT THING:
"WE'LL VISIT REAL SOON!"
THOUGH  MORE LIKELY THE SUN
LANDS ON TOP OF THE MOON!

WE ALL PRETEND INTEREST,
LIKE WE'RE GLAD WHO WE SEE,
AS WE CELEBRATE SOMETHING
SO MEANINGLESSLY.

IT'S JUST PART OF A GAME
WE'RE EXPECTED TO PLAY,
IT'S RITUAL RULES
WE'RE SUPPOSED TO OBEY.

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
SMILES COVER A LIE,
AND TEARS CAN'T BE FAKED
WHEN THERE'S NO URGE TO CRY.

AND NEW EVENTS ECHO
THE SAME OLD CHARADE,
JUST ANOTHER FLOAT ADDED
TO THE ENDLESS PARADE.

A disappointing holiday celebration. I get it. Thanks for your writing.

The usual falseness that surrounds family gatherings, when all year they have been bickering and avoiding each other, nicely written
