SILENT SOLDIER

nephilim56

A silent soldier
Rests his body
Reads a letter
Over again
Caresses a photograph
Kisses a dream
In the distance
Battle screams.

Nearby
In noisy argument
Playing cards
Drinking wine
Are his comrades
His deepest brothers
Killing time
Before they die.

The battle closes
Prepare for combat
As he gently
Folds the letter
Within the paper
Photograph placed
A gift to his family
Now in a box encased.

In so few words so much said. Loved the short lines giving a sense of urgency, The terseness added to this feel of something comming, The last lines with metaphor send the message clearly. Very well done

And this scene was probably played out many times during the war. Letters and photographs of loved ones and sweethearts were so very precious. All that there was from home apart from memories. Very nicely penned but so very poignant. Touched my heart it did.
