What words can do

Kaelyn Jade

Tearing people down—
it’s something we all end up doing.
Saying the wrong thing—
it’s bound to happen at least once.
We don’t have to mean it,
or even intend the pain,
but somehow, it happens again and again.

One day, if it hasn’t yet,
you’ll know how it feels.
People can hurt,
sometimes in ways you’ll never forget.
It’s usually their words—
as simple as that.
Words can cut wounds
deeper than you’d ever expect.

Some wounds are made on purpose,
inflicted to heal someone else’s pain.
Others are spoken without even knowing,
slowly sinking into our minds
until the damage starts showing.
Sometimes, we don’t think before we speak,
and the words slip out—
things we never should have said.

Words can hurt—
they’re sharper than knives.
They can cut us open
until we’re bleeding inside.
But as dangerous as they are,
I have a weapon—
something to keep them from getting in.

It’s like a shield against the unseen,
yet it still lets the right people in.
Sometimes, the words break through,
but I have a bandage—
and that’s why I can walk
without feeling the weight of judgment.

So here’s my secret,
I’ll give you a clue:
It’s called not letting people change you.
People like a person a whole lot more
when they stay true to who they are.
So be yourself—don’t give them the satisfaction.
That’s how you stand strong, just like everyone.

Powerful little things are words can make you feel awful or make you feel wonderful. It depends on how they are delivered and how they are interpreted, a strong piece of writing with a strong message.

To be one self is one's strongest weapon. A great message in this poem that breaks the fourth wall.
