The Kiama Rock-Hoppers Club

David Wakeling

My name is Amber Twist and this is my Confession.
When I was 11 I started the Kiama Rock-Hoppers Club.
My sister Belinda was the second member .
We used to hop rocks near the Kiama Beach for fun
 but sometimes we held competitions.
I reached the Champion Level because I could
Jump 10 rocks without stopping .
Belinda was really good for a 9 year old.
She reached Junior level of 4 hops.

The Summer of 1999 was to change everything.
We decided to make the hopping harder and hop nearer
To the waves. It was a test of courage.
As I was hopping a little girl came up and asked to join in.
She said her name was Paula.
We agreed to let her join if she could pass the initiation test.
The test involved 8 hops near the waves.

Paula  was 8 and was very talented and jumped high and fast.
She even resighted the Club Motto as she was going.
“We are the Rock Hoppers, Tall and Strong.
We are the Rock Hoppers, Always Right never Wrong.”

As she finished the motto the Sea crashed over her.
She just disappeared.

Belinda and I searched for a while but then started running.
We both spat on our hands and swore that we would never tell.

The next day saw the Beach closed and covered in Police.
They even had a Helicopter overhead.

Life grabbed me by the throat and walked me along.
I never spoke of those days to anyone.
I am confessing because I read in the paper
That the Police discovered the remains of a small child on the Kiama Beach.

I went to the Beach but it was isolated.
I confessed to the Sea. The sea become angry.
I confessed to the Wind. The Wind grew wild.
I confessed to God .But God was silent.

We have our own version in the West Moreton region, the Walloon sisters who both drowned in their backyard dam. So sad. πŸ•Š

Child or adult we often do foolish things that have bad results. Things we never intended but in our ignorance or neglect we are responsible and have to live with it. A wonderfully written piece set up well and well told with a sinking feeling at the end.
