Nature’s crackling vermillion messengers are fleeting across the wooden bench and stoned path,
May we experience this season for ourselves, though it will never last?
We talked sweetly in the slumber of September,
And I’ll be by you at the Thanksgiving table in November,
For now, all I want is us by the fireplace
Feeling the heat fall off from the embers.
Cinnamon, sugar, and salt spilled on the table
As we bake together in the kitchen,
And I amuse you with a ghost fable.
So let’s enjoy the other’s company while we’re able,
Talking until the stars and moon visit the sky,
Taking me home then, wishing me goodbye.
Pick me up the next day to go to the pumpkin patch,
Once we arrive, a bright orange batch
Will be there for us to view over ley,
Let’s sneak into that corn maze later
And share that first kiss
Buried in the secrets of hay.
A bonfire’s blooming in the backyard
Like fireflies released from a jar,
Hearing soft tunes of a guitar
To welcome in October
Because if we have this season to ourselves,
It won’t have to feel like it’s over.
We won’t have to be haunted in Halloween
Since spooky movies don’t scare us as teens,
And the sweater on me
Causes an itch and I don’t mind it
Because it’s a fabulous fit.
At midnight, we’ll steal the leftover candy,
Although my mother didn’t want us to touch the pantry,
If the time on the clock strikes just right,
We’ll escape silently and quickly,
And our relationship may make it to winter, it just might.

I love the use of seasons as the markers of time and development of a relationship with building emotions and the ending use of it as a knowledge that like the seasons relationships come and go. Masterfully done with playful rhyme that fits the mood. Brilliant!
