Sugar Maple Leaf Soup and the Stick Fairy.

David Wakeling

Beatrice loved her parents but they drove a stake through her heart.
She fought with them constantly and watched her life coming apart.
Her father was lame and her mother was sarcastic,
Her brother was made from old bits of thrown away plastic.

Beatrice’s world was a glass vase that someone had dropped too many times.
It reached the stage where she could only communicate in grunts and mimes.

One Autumn day when God forgot to be vengeful Beatrice left home for good.
She walked into the forest and sat down on an ancient pile of wood.
The wood had once been a fine tall Sugar Maple tree,
And Beatrice felt safe and  laid down to rest in tranquillity.

God woke up and became vengeful again,
He sent cold winds and froze the falling rain.
Beatrice started a fire rubbing sticks together but had nothing to eat,
Hunger settle around her  like a black panther  at her feet.

She longed for her father’s stupid jokes and her mother’s wisdom.
She even longed for her brother to make faces and act dumb.

The fire was warm and a she found an old can and filled it with water.
She broke up leaves and made an maple leaf soup.
As Beatrice sat there an image appeared.
It was a tiny fairy with a stick.
The fairy would say.” Bad temper bad girl” and hit her with the stick.
For hours it would tease and torment her.
“You ungrateful girl, you had everything  and you threw it away.
Time to grow up and get out of the woods and face the day.”
Get back to your life and stop stalling.
Beatrice rose and began to walk back when she heard her father calling.
I missed you Daddy mine, I missed you Daughter mine

Good words David, sometime people forget what goodness they had in their lives.

What is good and what is bad is a matter of comparison and one can not make that until one has something to compare it against. Great story David

They think the grass is always greener on the other side, until you get to the other side. A lovely tale with an important message, enjoyed the read.

Interesting tale and curious in its telling as well. Quite graphic and raw in emotion. A stylistic achievement 🙏🏻🕊
