There will now be a short Intermission.
Our Sales Staff will be in all parts of my Webpage selling: Chock Ices , Soft drinks and Pop Corn.

Amongst the Row upon Row of polished shelfs,

The books all Patiently stand in file,

Their stories and facts make up their wealth,

And whatever else their leaves compile.

All Human flair and brilliance laid,

The Centuries Store  where all Wisdom meet,

The Writers toiled and plied their trade,

And unto this Temple we honour that feat.

The Eminent Dickens was the lord of his Art,

So Hardy with his Pen ; a tragedy so fine,

The Poets of old with all Verse from the Heart,

All Artists of Wit ; and a talent sublime.

From the deepest Blue Ocean to the Brightest of Stars,

The Mountains by Forest and Brook,

The History of Man through his folly in War,

All facts so abound, within that Nonpareil book.

For its Libraries we need, for the Welfare of the Whole,

For every Library that dies-

Starves a Town of its Soul.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I remember reading a quote years ago; when someone said : ‘We have plenty of Prisons but little Libraries’. So lack of Self- Education may lead to Crime. Even now Libraries are under threat. This is an old Poem .

A wonderful piece. You make your point so well and the last line just nailed it. Very well done.

Thank you for Reading and your Comment.

So true, not only libraries but books themselves and few children like to read anymore. Video games, streamed movies, tic tock have all replaced books. A sad condition.

Quite right about ‘Video Games’ and ‘Tic Tock’ etc , that’s all some Kids do. One good thing about J. K.Rowling is : she got some Children Reading. Thank you for Reading.

Many prisons have libraries and that’s where (by force of circumstance) some play catch ups with their education and humanisation… when it should have been the other way around. But that’s an aside. Superb enjoyment, I remember the classics being the largest of my physical library. 🙏🏻🕊

The Quote I remember, I think was from the 19th Century. Don’t know if Prisons had Libraries then . More like back-Breaking punishment, or sent to your neck of the Woods. Any way up, Conditions improved since. Thanks as always for reading.
