IF TODAY HAD BEEN YESTERDAY

nephilim56

War has ended
Now we drink
Exchanging rations
Telling jokes
My new found friends
A thought it hits me
If today
Had been yesterday.

I would have tried
To kill you
Bullet bayonet
Trench spade, bare hands
These same hands
That now shake yours
If today
Had been yesterday.

This poem holds a deep metaphor. Although so pertinent to war and nations it also applies to individuals. Animals of the moment and false at heart, who is lover today is victim of a passion crime tomorrow, Allies today enemies tomorrow. Yet the people do not change only the momentary needs, driven by greed and lust. A powerful poem of the human condition or lack there of. A fave

A great poem about past atrocities and where the world could be heading in the future
