THE OLD PORTRAIT

nephilim56

The eyes bear
Such sorrow
Lines on the face
Hard cruel life
More than
Mortals can take.

Within oval frame
Dreams lie broken
Hair unkempt
A time now forsaken
Deep is the torment
That litters your face.
A distant time
Another place.

From daguerreotype
Haunting and bare
A poverty long lost
Without a care
Now lifeless
Threadbare.

I remember years ago finding a box of old photos at my grandmothers house from the 1800's and many of the faces were unrecognizable as to who they were. No one living remembered them now just ghosts in picture format. A fave
