All men
Believe in God
When sargeant puts
That whistle to lips
The same lips
Which kissed
His wife, his child
His mother.
Say farewell
To muddy trench
Artillery hits
Make a wish
For safe return
Body intact
The whistle blows
Begin attacks.
Upward, outward
Clear sky
Blood and guts
Birds on high
Men fall and curse
Beg for mother
Their words
Machine guns smother.
Forward into
Mankinds madness
Loved ones
Forthcoming sadness
Telegrams home
No one dies
In vain
INSANE !

Anti war? Me too. This poem puts it all out there the stupidity and lunacy of war when there is so much to live for. A powerful write
very kind, thanks
'Over the Top', I presume you are alluding to, World War One. An absolute senseless war and how you have expressed it in this splendid is most admirable, especially so: 'The same lips/ which kissed/ His wife, his child/ his mother' - a beautiful poetic sorrow. Congratulations on this very fine poem.
Kind regards,
Tony.
