It was already so late,
I was already so tired,
it would have made sense to go to bed immediately.
But I had been working all day,
Tirelessly for hours,
so why not stay up later for myself?
It was foolish perhaps,
But I couldn't resist,
outside the window, the rain made a heavy fall.
I grabbed an old blanket,
One given as a gift,
from a high school date asking to a dance.
I wrapped it around me,
And opened the window,
where I sat myself on the sill.
I stuck my feet out,
Balancing on the ledge,
looking out from my view two stories high.
The night was quiet,
The dark so dark,
all lit by a street lamp, not even fifty feet away.
My feet stuck out,
Over the ledge,
so the rain touched them gently.
I pulled the blanket,
Tighter around me,
covering my tank-top-exposed shoulders.
As I moved suddenly,
I almost lost my balance,
but I didn't tumble out of the window.
I could see the rain,
As clear as day,
fall in the glow of the street lamp.
My feet began to hurt,
Cold from the rain,
I took turns pressing them into the arch of the other.
Slowly but surely,
I maneuvered myself,
back inside the room, and into my bed.
I grabbed my stuffed bunny,
And held it tight to my chest,
no living thing to love me.
