Root of My Name

G.Cabús

Mother,

I don’t say “mom” as one utters a word,

but as one summons a refuge.

You were the first to hear me without sound,

the first to feel my steps before I ever walked.

You were the earth that never asked for glory,

the silence that held up my cry.

I saw you break into fragments so I could be whole.

I witnessed your moonless nights,

your days worn thin but your heart still burning.

You gave your flesh to my story

and your time to my wings.

You never asked for anything in return,

and yet you gave it all.

With every sacrifice you made,

I grew.

With every hidden tear,

I was being formed.

You didn’t just give me life:

you gave me meaning.

Today, now that I have words to name what I feel,

I name you root, I name you strength, I name you eternity.

Because it was you who taught me to endure,

to love without conditions,

to believe in myself when everything outside screamed no.

You are the flame that never goes out,

the guardian of all I am.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.

Because loving you is not a matter of a date,

it is a matter of awareness.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem was born from the deepest chambers of my being, where memory, gratitude, and awe for motherhood converge. It is not just a tribute—it is a testimony. A mother is not merely a role; she is a force of nature, a silent architect of futures, and the first heartbeat we ever knew. Writing this piece allowed me to honor the invisible threads that tie a mother’s soul to her child’s becoming. In every line, I sought to echo the unspoken strength, the tender resilience, and the eternal presence that defines the sacred bond between mother and child. I wrote this poem for the woman who carried me in her womb, who fed me with her hands, wrapped me in her warmth, and guarded me from a world I didn’t yet understand. She is the first home I ever knew. But this isn’t just my story—it’s the story of all who have been held, nurtured, and protected by a mother’s love. The poem is a universal offering, a recognition of every woman who has loved fiercely, sacrificed quietly, and shaped life through her devotion. It is for every mother whose strength goes unsung, but never unnoticed.

A most beautiful Mother's day wish and declaration. Words well chosen and nicely composed.
