Fading Into Numbness

TheInnerLens

Here's a poem that transforms the quote into a reflective, lyrical piece:

I've built these walls with trembling care,
Believing they'd secure my fragile core—
Every brick a guard against despair,
Yet now I sense I'm losing more.

Behind each stone, safety softly lies,
Cloaking me in quiet, guarded night;
But as the distance between truth and guise
Grows, I watch my self fade from sight.

Each shut gate, each measured shield,
Meant to fend off the jagged sting,
Steals a bit of the life once revealed,
Leaving echoes where my spirit would sing.

I stand inside this fortress of my own design,
Where numbness whispers in every silent hall—
A slow, receding echo of what was once mine,
A shadow of passion that dares not call.

Safe in this solitude, I feel a cost—
A vanishing self, a part of me erased;
Each time I shield, a piece of life is lost,
Dimming the spark that once blazed.

So, in these walls that promised to protect,
I find a quiet truth, both cruel and fair:
In guarding against hurt, I too disconnect,
Fading away into numb, desolate air.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Tear Down the Walls, Step Into Grace The Lord did not create us to live behind walls of fear—He calls us into the fullness of life, into trust, into light. *“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”* (2 Timothy 1:7). When we build barriers to shield ourselves from pain, we risk shutting out His healing and peace. Isolation may feel safe, but it is not where we thrive. Jesus Himself embraced the broken, the weary, the wounded—*“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”* (Matthew 11:28). In Him, there is refuge, but not confinement. He calls us to courage, to openness, to love without fear. The walls we build cannot keep out His grace. No fortress is stronger than the power of redemption. If you feel yourself fading into numbness, remember: *“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit”* (Psalm 34:18). Step forward. Let His light in. Tear down the walls, and walk in faith.

    Very nicely worded and loved the rhyme scheme. A poem with a message.
