An Unspoken Conversation

Radha Raghunathan

This morning

Fine and early

When the sky

Yet to see pink

The cool breeze

Cooling the dew

Settled on the path.

I took my walk

Brisk and swift

On a side of a road.

My ears plugged

I walked

Humming a prayer

In my mind.

Then I saw

A small stone

Not too tiny.

Wet by dew

Alone it lay

On the roadside

Along my track.

Did the tiny rock

Beckon me?

I heard no voice.

My ears plugged

I walked on

Humming the prayer

In my mind.

I returned

Along my track

With another prayer

In my mind.

That littlestone

Lay there still.

Did it beseech me

To say something?

I thought I saw

Its eyes looking at me.

I thought I heard

Its voice calling me.

Was it cold

Needing a wrap, or

A warm hug?

The sky turned pink.

I had to rush

Leaving the stone

Alone where it lay

For another passer-by

To listen to what

It wanted to say.

  • Comment from author about the poem: William Henry Davies wonders, “What is this life, … no time to stand and stare.’ (W.H. Davies, Poem: ‘Leisure’ – 1911). The hustle and bustle of everyday life leaves one no time to snatch a moment to breathe in the beauty and ponder on messages around. Brisk walking in the mornings has become a fitness mantra and a ritual. But the time is now utilised to complete other routines like chanting prayers which are best done with focussed calmness, or to catch up with conversations on mobile phones… ‘An unspoken conversation’ between an early morning walker and a little stone lying on the roadside as if seeking attention conveys this ‘time-less’ state for little joys we are in today.

A lovely write of finding quiet with yourself to clear the mind and notice things your normal hectic day would not allow, enjoyed the read

A great metaphor. Nicely penned it speaks of passing by things that may or may not have special meaning just because we are too busy.

Hi Radha glad to see you taking time off from your non stop official duties to pen this small but powerful message- yes we see a lot of things but do not observe them in detail or take time off to ponder 🤔 about them
Keep it up dear friend 🌹👏
