The 2002 Melbourne Cup.

David Wakeling

Gates are back and they’re racing,
They’re off in the cup.
And “Young hopeful” towards the outside,
is best to jump with “Good at School” and “Abandoned Boy”
isn’t too far away.
Also “Angry Teen” showing speed.
“Pacifism” the international in the yellow jacket
is also up there with the leaders across the track
in the first 2 or 3 hundred metres.
“Shy Lover” and “Deceitful Princess” from barrier 1 are moving quickly.
“Depression” drives up the lead,
with “Anger and blame”
“Defeated “ without a fight is even deeper.
“Loneliness” is about 7 wide with “Wrong Career” and others with him.
They were followed by “Anxiety” and back in the field is “Little Blue Eyes”
and “Days at the beach” from ”Eternal Faith”.
then came “Secret Affair” who is 3 wide.
Next in the field came “heartbreak”, “Divorce”
and 2nd last on the rails is “Young Hopeful”
At the end of the field and settling down into stride is “Abandoned Boy”
As they leave the straight with 2200 metres to run.
And the favourite “Golden Lad” is mid field.
A length away is “Poverty”
And with 1600 metres to run is “Despairing”
a length to “Fatigue”
A length away is “Arthritis”
“Young Hopeful” is getting moving
“Good at School” is going to set the cup on fire
“Eternal Faith “is going to break their hearts.
“Golden Lad” is brave
“Golden Lad" is going to win.
"Golden Lad has won the Melbourne Cup"
Next came “Fatigue” followed by “Eternity”.

A race for the money where gold always has an advantage. A most interesting poem David where the movement of the race enthralls the reader to the very end the use of a race and curiosity as to who the winner will be also holds attention. Very nicely written
