From Gala to Gloom

Narayan Gadagkar

The liquor barons hatched a plan

To cash on the craze of cricket fans

Top players with celebrity status

Are source of a great prize catch.

Chosen are players on auction

Ready to take on with action

Less of sports more of money and mania

Players with name and fame grab the offer.

Flow of filth money in bags to rope in

So, more fans in the loop get trapped in

No national fervour nor a state delight

Surely a corporate’s strength and might.

Hired players zoom, hit four and six

Win the match with bunch of tricks

The rain of runs scored by the players

The tournament trophy won with cheers.

The winners upbeat in enthusiasm and pride

They stood up and started to march in a ride

The ebullient fans were crowded and cheered.

Frenzied mob Jostling for space in brimming crowd.

One over the above in a melee got trapped

All over complete confusion and chaos spread

The afterglow faded and the fun and frolic failed

Deep gloom settled over the stadium so wide.

A stampede ensued, and a rush was made pell-mell,

And in the crush, trying to get out, many people fell.

Many succumbed and joyous commotion died away soon

The scene around, soon engulfed in a Pall of gloom.
