if only I could recall….

Man’s ultimate predator is Man
I’ve become oblivious to the carnage
I’ve become numb to the news
The devil now finds no reason to be cloaked
His actors are openly marching in full daylight
They find no reason to hide,
Followers have risen cult like
The shear stupidity to knowingly choose totalitarianism
The willingness to give up one’s freedom
These are not people of ignorance
Each generation asks the same questions
What’s in it for me
My actions only produce one result
No matter what I do
No matter how I act
No matter my politeness
My survival is at the mercy of others
I’m a beggar, not only in the material sense,
but also of the spiritual, for I’ve lost all worth,
I’m now a broken man lost of all value
The unfortunate thing is that this person,
Cloaked in “I” must continue
Not that I seek
Either material wealth
Or even spiritual solace
For neither has any currency for me
The fool in me still wonders why my actions
Still punish me thus, knowing very well
The past actions are haunting me
The past that I cannot erase
The past that I cannot change
But no matter what I am going through
My actions must stay the course
While the thought has crossed my mind
It’s so easy to be swayed by the demons
Does he wants me to surrender
Does he wants me to admit defeat
Is it not enough that I’m completely humiliated
Is it not enough that I’ve lost all self respect
Yes, I want the pain to disappear
But I don’t seek the comforts either
Is that truly why I’m suffering today
For I must’ve made the same deal
Bargained away the future, paid forward
I must’ve been made to “eat crow”
I must’ve been at the same crossroads
I must’ve, if only I could recall…..

There is a sense of Nihilism in this poem a feeling of hopelessness. Well written and maybe an inability to remember would be helpful in easing what would otherwise be pain.
Your ability to understand is greatly appreciated.
A lovely write at the increasingly selfish nature of man and the sense of hopelessness many feel as we watch the world fall apart around us, enjoyed the read
Even though every generation may have felt this sense of hopelessness, it just feels more dire right now.
Thank you for your comments.
You are very welcome
We all have such moments .. I'm just glad you had a pen or a keyboard handy on or around the 15th September 2023 to mark such an otherwise forgettable occasion ..
Indeed my friend indeed.
Thanks
