The Art of Listening

Mercy Robert

To listen
Not to hear
Is to sit in stillness
Taking in all that is being said.

It is the quiet nod in a storm of noise
The pause between syllables,
Where meaning settles like dust
On untouched shelves of the soul.

To listen is to lay down your weapons
Of reply, of judgment
Of quick fixes and clever phrases
And instead
offer your presence
like shelter from the rain.

The art of listening
Is the grace of surrender
To let another’s story breathe
Without needing to shape its end.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is a quiet reflection on something we often overlook — the simple, powerful art of truly listening. In a world where everyone wants to be heard, we sometimes forget the gift it is to receive another’s words with care and without interruption. Listening is sacred. This poem it invites us to slow down, open our hearts, and make room for others: not to fix, but to witness. Because sometimes, what people need most is not an answer, but to know they’ve been truly heard.

A strong message that deserves to be heard. How rude is it to want others to listen to us and hear us but not listen and hear them. A great message

Listening is definitely a lost art in today’s time!
