Choice

Precious Chukwudi

A short-lived acquaintance of mine
Once told me not to judge people’s choices
Without knowing their options.

Well, that played live in my head for some reason.
My mind could not contain the dawn of reality
For it was beyond what is in the books.

Why choose to be second to a man
When you can be first to another?
There is more to choices and connubiality.

Left with an offspring of his, being first to another in a third world
Is out of the book, literally or not, realistically, it is not happening.
So why lose the opportunity to be at least someone’s spouse?

But that could bring pain to someone else.
"Well, that is not my fault," she replied.
"I am first a traditional Nigerian.
A request was made, and a response was given."

That moment, everything I knew about matrimonial homes
Collapsed.
Nothing really is nothing.
She was right.
She has her beliefs, and her choices are made in accordance with that.

In an African world, anything could happen.
The involvement of social media and western culture
Confuses the African mind on how to believe what he believes.
With some youth screaming, "We are losing our culture,"
And others saying, "Be modernised,"
It makes me wonder if we truly understand
The depth of what we are clamouring for.
