O sovereign Lord, what wisdom dost Thou hide?
To cast a star that burneth mortal eyes,
One angel 'mong the wretched dust shall bide,
An idol wrought, on faith, in blindness' guise.
Almighty one, why craft a flawed domain,
Wherein her matchless grace shall not be found?
For her the saints and seraphim complain,
Their sacred tears baptize the cursèd ground.
O Father, count me 'mong Thy faithful ones,
Whose life is naught but praise of all Thou art,
Though heav'n thy mercy grant thy pious sons,
One fear doth grow as death toucheth my heart.
O Lord, if heaven has no sight of her,
My soul rests neither in high skies nor hell.
