Built this city

Georgia Watson

Built this city:

I built this city,

Brick by brick,

Upon its fiery eye I see,

a wonderful place;

for people like you and me.

I’ve heard the rumours,

I’ve seen the stories,

Of a mother on a mountain.

Mourning.

Though I can’t change it,

I can’t speak the truth,

I look around and all I see is you.

I built this city,

the fire in my eyes,

but it’s all worthless,

Without you by my side.

A mournful and sad poem that speaks to loneliness and to loss. Well done

Have just written a poem called “Englands on fire.” My best work in my opinion.

Georgia, what a beautifully honest piece. The repetition gives it this steady emotional rhythm...like the speaker is trying to hold something together even as it slips. That last stanza lays the truth down gently. Powerful work. 🌹👏
