My Sonshines

Mercy Robert

My Sonshines

My boys, giggling and chuckling
their eyes wide and bright
sparkling like stars in an open sky
Their hair, full and soft
frames their innocent faces
They smile from cheek to cheek
laughing at my exaggerated moves
at the little things I do
just to make them laugh

They lie on their backs
legs slightly raised
hands floating mid-air
completely lost in the moment

David and Daniel
My Sonshines
The light that streams into every corner of my life
The joy I never knew I needed
until they came

I watch them closely
At least one, I’m sure
looks like Mum
The other, maybe more like Dad
Or maybe they’re both
a perfect mix of us
carrying pieces of who we are
reflecting the love we share

My Sonshines
I knew them long before they arrived
before their names were spoken aloud
before they ever reached for me
I saw them in dreams
in quiet prayers
in the waiting space between hope and reality

Grandma would be overjoyed
Her heart would be full
and finally, I would have my peace
Not peace from critics
but peace from the voice of the woman who birthed me
the voice that longed to see me mother children of my own

I love you both
David and Daniel
Not only for who you are
but for what you’ve awakened in me
You are my Sonshines
my joy, my light,
my forever reminder that love multiplies
