To a soul bent lowest by worldly pain,
From the Lord came a gift, called Hedieh,
A goddess, pristine as a cleansing rain,
With words as soothing as fair Althea.
My bleak faith saw signs of higher powers,
When thou wert sent down to my mournful way,
A holy light shone on my darkest hours,
A star wrought to herald a new bright day.
From two unknown poets, I heard thy praise,
Who thy great kindness and virtue impart,
'mong thy admirers, allow my words to raise,
For thou hast also blessed my woeful heart.
My fragile eyes cannot bear thy bright grace,
Nor can mine ears thy highest words now hear,
With thy favor, my endless wounds efface,
As thou heardest my love's fable sincere.
I had longed for aid from the gods above,
Who bound and chained me in the sweetest spell,
Thy healing words revived my purest love,
When thou spakest what my muse dared not tell.
Thou puttest an end to my sleepless nights,
When I was lost in dreams of false deceit,
My heart, before the most gracious of lights,
At last, now finds its calm and steady beat.
Wishing gods may e’er have mercy on thee,
Though dust am I, my heart still soars on high,
Within my nightly prayers, I bend the knee,
To greet thee with my Beatrice in the sky.
