Let me be honest

Jane Walker

My dad was the kindest soul I’ve known—

Soft-spoken, steady, full of heart.
If goodness ever wore a name,
It wore his, right from the start.

But I watched Alzheimer's steal his light,
Bit by bit, day by day.
No mercy, no reason, no grand design—
Just silence where he used to stay.

People said, "God has a plan,"
But what kind of plan breaks someone so kind?
What kind of love forgets to show
A little grace, a little mind?

And then I looked around the world—
The wars, the hate, the pain in prayer.
Too many battles waged in faith
While real love fought for air.

Science made more sense to me—
Clearer answers, steadier ground.
Not mystery or fear or guilt,
Just patterns, questions, truth unbound.

I don’t hate belief—I understand
Why people cling to something more.
But knowing what we know today,
I just don’t need that myth anymore.

So no, I don’t believe there’s someone
Pulling strings or writing fate.
I believe in kindness, thought, and love—
But not in pearly gates.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I'm doing a lot of thinking at the moment. This poem is the result. It's not meant to offend anyone, everybody has their right to believe. I would fight for anyone's right to believe

Well worded in good meter and rhyme it speaks of disillusionment, logic, a different method of understanding. Well composed it is a fave

  • Poetic Licence

A sensitively written write of disillusionment in faith, and searching for a better understanding of how life can be so cruel, nicely expressed and written

  • Tony36

    Well written and expressed
