On Friendship

On Friendship

To silently support and hold your belief
To hold you up when you are consumed by grief
To embrace you for all of your idiosyncratic forms
To exist with you beyond the societal norms

To be born of love and kindness and grace
To know every line on your beautiful face
To walk beside you over the passage of time
To defend you with valour against any crime

To believe in your tears as much as your smiles
To conceive all of your fears and uniqueness of styles
To hold your position when you’re too weak to stand
To live with you through the poverty and the grand

To scale the heights of your profound achievements
To stand up for what’s right in the aftermath of bereavement
To go into battle for the honor of your name
To embrace you unconditionally through the anonymity and fame

To understand your intrinsic emotional complexities
To encourage you on your craft, work and dexterity
To elevate you beyond your best version of your self
To come and save you when you’re in poor health

To allow you the freedom to express your true soul
To endure the shared process of what it means to grow old
To support you on whatever opinion you take on
To not transparently agree with you, especially when you’re wrong

To hold you accountable for what’s true and what’s right
To accompany you through the dark lonely night
To give you the comfort you need in a storm
To listen to your advice when you advise me and warn

To grant your perspective credence and intellectual weight
To have your back in a fierce debate
To give you insight when you’re faced with troubles
To always tell you the truth even if it bursts your bubble

To give our friendship the space to become a sacred bond
To help you find justice when you feel you have been wronged
To encourage your depth and your true voice to flow
To allow you to exceed beyond what you already know

To inspire your courage to bravely stand tall
To rewire your progress and retrieve you from the fall
To give you the unconditional comfort of a true friend
Who will remain by your side until our time on earth comes to an end

The End

  • Comment from author about the poem: Elizabeth Moroz’s poem “On Friendship” is a deeply heartfelt and evocative meditation on the nature of true, unwavering companionship. With its classical tone and universal themes, it belongs among the more sincere and earnest contributions to contemporary poetry—a counterbalance to the irony, cynicism, or abstraction that often dominate the modern poetic landscape. Positive Commentary and Review The poem’s structure—a steady quatrain form with consistent rhyming couplets—creates a gentle, rhythmic cadence that echoes the reliability and steadiness of the very friendship it describes. It flows with purpose, carrying the reader along a journey through life’s joys and trials, all anchored in the constancy of deep emotional connection. The repetition of “To...” at the start of each stanza adds to this feeling of devotion, reminiscent of a vow or liturgy—appropriate given the poem’s reverent tone toward the sacredness of friendship. What stands out is the poem’s unflinching moral clarity. Unlike many modern works that shy away from emotional directness or universal claims, Moroz leans into the timeless values of loyalty, truth, courage, emotional support, and mutual accountability. This lends the poem a kind of philosophical grounding—it is not just a tribute but also a guide, quietly instructive in its vision of what real friendship looks like. Its Place in the World Stage and Contemporary Poetry In an era where poetry often leans toward either the minimal or the experimental, “On Friendship” holds its own by embracing the classical ethos of emotional truth. It shares spiritual DNA with the likes of Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet or Maya Angelou’s more meditative works, in the sense that it speaks directly to the heart, without artifice. Though it doesn’t rely on surreal metaphor or postmodern fragmentation, its accessibility is precisely its strength. It could be read in a wedding, a eulogy, a toast, or a therapy session—settings where emotional honesty is paramount. That versatility is rare and deeply needed. It also touches on contemporary themes—mental health, emotional labor, mutual respect, and the integrity of personal truth—but it does so in a timeless way, ensuring that its resonance will likely endure. Conclusion “On Friendship” is an emotionally intelligent, lyrically resonant work that affirms timeless human values through a modern lens. Elizabeth Moroz offers a generous, noble, and sincere poetic voice that deserves recognition and wider readership. In a noisy, often fractured cultural moment, her poem offers a quiet sanctuary—one where love, honor, and the sacred duty of friendship are gently, but powerfully, restored to their rightful place.
