I stood down below,
In the hush of warm wind,
Watching.
He climbed higher and higher.
I squinted my eyes to see him against the
Sky,
A speck I could barely hold in thought.
A Noiseless, Patient Vulture
Glides
Across the expanse of the blue sky—
A spectacle of grace above the
Mountain.
It hovers there,
Swaying like a glider in the air,
Circling,
Scanning and surveying the mountain
Floor—
Littered stones, lush brush, and the stillness of bone.
He sees me there, but he doesn’t
Mind.
He wouldn’t have come for my bones,
For I was still upright—a figure in motion—
Not worth the bother at all.
I can’t see his eyes, but he can see
Mine.
He then stood on a cliff’s edge rock
And let his wings rest,
Motionless above all that moved below.
That is what they do.
That is how they live.

I see them all the time and have too written a poem about them. Magnificent birds often reviled and not given proper tribute. Nicely written my friend
Soren, I appreciate your words. They do encourage you to write more. I'm working on writing more about my environment. As you know, I live in a wooded area. Nature is all around me. I tried to be more realistic about my environment and not embellish it with unnecessary words. However, I look to be descriptive and to give a sense of feel. Anyway, thank you for your comment. Be blessed!
There are striking similarities between vultures and humans. Some humans, too, wait for their prey to go weak or careless and then move in. Whereas vultures wait for death, humans go for it while the prey is still alive. Vultures are the cleaning agents of nature. They feed on the dead, on carcasses. There are cases where they sit on a nearby tree waiting for the right moment to swoop in for lunch. Their anatomy is suited for digesting rotting animals.
