The Quiet Joy of Friend

Good Friends Just Show Up Anyway

(sonnet #MMMMMMMMMCCDLXXXIV)

They text me that they’re near, I say come through,

And put the kettle on. The couch’s a mess

From cats, of course—but good friends never stress

About that stuff. They bring cream for the brew,

Some snack we’ll both enjoy. No plans, just true

Companionship. We talk, or sit wordless.

They help me do the dishes, more or less,

And laugh at all the little things we do.

Like, I forgot I left the tea to steep

Too long again. "It's fine!"—they always smile.

I lend them socks, they help me fold the heap

Of laundry I ignored a good long while.

It’s not about the big things. LORD, You keep

Us rich in love that lasts through every mile.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I write because the world, in its bustling hurry, often forgets the small, sacred moments we share. It’s in these quiet exchanges—between friends, with loved ones, or even in solitude—that I find life’s deepest treasures. My words are just echoes of those fleeting yet meaningful pieces of life, a little reminder to pause, to look, to feel. We’re all in this together, figuring it out day by day, and it’s a gift to share the journey through poetry. I hope my lines find you where you need them, as they have always found me.

So refreshing to feel the comradeship that goes with a visit for no other reason than to spend time and help out with what is needed. It speaks of friendship who's value is in being with someone not in what they can give. A lovely poem that feels like home
