The Change

Ezekiel Olayemi

Hughes wrote that he is tired.
He said, Let’s cut the world—make it two.
No more hope, only pain.
No waiting for happiness,
or peace,
or joy.

I am so tired of waiting.
If I wait a thousand years
and return,
the world will still sit still.

I see what’s in the rind—
but I will be the change.

This time,
I will be the change the world needs—
to make all beautiful again,
and end the repeating circle of life
for good.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is my answer to Langston Hughes. In his poem Tired, he said he was done waiting for the world to be good, and he wanted to cut it open— to see what was eating it from the inside. I read his words and felt that same weariness… but I couldn’t leave it there. This… is my reply.

A most interesting response or rather addition to another poet. A lovely addition
