Chanced once, on a time,
my mind broke loose
meditating on the things that are,
my body held back,
heavy as sleep after feasting.
Then
a Being vast, beyond bounds,
called out my hidden name.
“What wouldst thou know? What flame do you seek?”
I stammered: Who art thou?
He saith: I am the First Voice
the Infinite Mind,
that walks within you, everywhere.
I cried: Teach me the All,
teach me to know God!
And straightway His form dissolved into Light
limitless, joyous, a flood through my skull,
till I drowned in vision.
But Darkness came,
folding like a serpent,
groaning, birthing smoke,
a Voice of Fire cracking its lungs.
Out of Light, a Word descended,
Holy, sharp, Logos alive
Fire leapt, Air followed,
Earth and Water clung, tangled—
chaos craving order,
yet moved by Spirit’s breath.
He spoke:
That Light am I—thy God, thy Mind.
Logos, Son of Mind, is Life within thee.
Not separate are we—Father and Word—
union alone is breath, union alone is Life.
My knees broke, trembling.
His gaze pierced marrow,
and cosmos unbound poured into me—
spheres whirled, fire subdued,
all spinning as Mind desired.
Know this, He said,
Nature copies the Beautiful,
her womb swelling with souls,
her waters reflecting Man’s form.
And Man, beloved Image,
twofold creature,
deathless and mortal,
slave of Fate, lover of Light.
O Infinite Mind,
O First Voice of Fire,
you laid bare the Mystery:
that Love binds death to birth,
that knowing oneself is immortality,
that those without Mind
wander in Darkness,
while the pure turn disgusted from flesh,
cutting off the doors of desire.
Thus spoke the Infinite Mind
the First Voice within the silence,
the Word within the Mind,
the Mind within the Word.
And I, undone,
gave thanks,
knowing that Life is Light,
and Light is God,
and God is the Form
that loves its own shadow.
