As The Train Sings

Emery Walker

Go south to north, south to north.

Go south to north then north to south.

Go ahead and take that train north

As it sings a lullaby to you on the iron tracks.

To the house that you always hated

That train you take will just take you north;

It’ll take you back and forth, forth and back.

The destination will always stay the same

To the house on the corner street

That your father mortgages

That was caused by a divorce

Is always going to be up north.

So take your usual seat on those carriages,

That continues to rock you to sleep,

That drowns out all the damages;

No-one will ever hear you weep.

The train carols loud, but the house is louder.

It’ll whistle to you, it acts like a warning;

That train you take will only take you north.

So why are you expecting a different destination?

    A great metaphor in a real setting the two merge in meaning as one considers why the same action has a different expected outcome. Nicely done using repetition as a reinforcing agent.
