FACADE

Lily May Emerald

LOOK AT THE SUNIT, SKY BLUE DAY
THROUGH THE FALSENESS OF LYING EYES.
THE TRUTH OF NATURE CONTRASTING
WITH YOUR CAMOFLAGE DISGUISE.

PRETEND THAT ALL IS WELL
WHEN YOU'RE FEELING SICK INSIDE,
HAVING FEASTED TOO LONG
AT THE BANQUET
FROM A TABLE FULL OF LIES.

WHAT HAPPENED TO WHAT YOU
REMEMBER
THAT YOU KNOW PRETEND TO
FORGET?
AS IF WHO YOU WERE THEN
AND WHO YOU ARE NOW
ARE TWO PEOPLE
WHO NEVER HAVE MET?

TAKE PRIDE THAT YOU'RE NOW
A STATISTIC;
WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID
YOU SHOULD BE.
WAS IT WORTH THE APPROVAL,
THE CLONE VALIDATION,
AS YOU PLUNGED IN THE KNIFE,
SHED THE LIFE'S BLOOD
AND NOW STAND
AT THE GRAVE
OF YOUR CORPSE,
ONCE CALLED "ME"???

  • Comment from author about the poem: It's about how too many people live their lives in accordance with the prevailing social context, ignoring their own true selves, and considering themselves happy if they follow the crowd, sacrificing their own individuality, moral compass, personal tastes and the things that make them who they are.
