Between my smile and her silence

Shuvam Shah

When I look at people,

They look back at me-

With hatred,

With dread,

With disappointment.

When I smile,

They frown.

When I laugh,

They scowl.

But when I looked at her,

She didn't look back at me.

And maybe her indifference

Was what made the difference

In me.

I hoped-

that when I smiled,

She would smile back at me.

When I laughed,

She would laugh with me.

But as time passes,

the hope fades away...

Along with me.

A feeling of sadness pervades this poem not just from ridicule but from being ignored. Nicely written it leaves a feeling of fading hope.

The last line drives home the sadness. Hope fades and so do you. Wish you better times ahead. If the love does not come back to you, it was not meant to be yours. So, keep up your spirits.
