More Wrong, Less Right

Dan Williams

Setting out unscheduled but on time,

traveling in shadows after dark.

There is an overture underneath this journey,

same scene in a different dream

producing delayed echoes of past voyages

to deduce yes, I may have been here before.

Now with honesty disheveled and slumping

from betrayals thudding against it,

empathy lost in the frontal lobes,

saw my reflection in the window

of the emotion discount store;

passions marked down, on sale.

Stood in a line of procrastinators,

sober as stone but made giddy,

obscured by the same nagging analysis

wondering if freedom was driven out

or just escaped;

wandered that megapolis unarmed.

Logic’s head gone, body still struggles.

Consciousness compromised by dreamless sleep.

Conclusions more wrong or less right.

Searching for solace I tripped over intelligence,

left no trail of crumbs to follow home,

may never come back from the echoes and shadows.
