How do I know I’ve fallen

Violet_Writes

When do you know you’ve fallen and hit the ground with a thud?
When do you know there’s no hope of flying?
That you’ve fallen and been tied down to something cruel.
Love — simple, dangerous, heartbreaking, horrifying even.

When do you know?
Is it when you hear their breathing and it calms you?
Or when they just say “hi” and it changes your mood?
Or when they smile and you can hear it in their voice — is that the sign?

Because I’ve been driving awhile, and I’m still lost.
I can’t find which road leads to home.
I came to a fork, and both paths whispered your name.

So, what do I do?
My map is blank.
My heart — it’s basic.

What do you do? How do you know
When you’ve fallen
For someone so far away,
So far down the road that when fog sets in or rain falls,
You have to pull over and take a break — Too scared you might crash and end up dead.
Too scared you’ll mess it up,
Push the gas instead of the brake,
Or miss the stop sign until it’s too late.

So many things come to mind when I think of you.
How do I know I’ve fallen
When I’m too scared to love you?

A poem of questions with great analogies and similes. Very nicely written with a tenderness that is poetic.
