The Wait

Kurt Philip Behm

An unmarried girl

in the wilderness

Any hopes of a suitor

are slim

Her virtue unsold

forever braving the cold

She waits for the promise

of him

An unpublished poem

in the syllabus

Any pressure to edit

unmoved

The words as they lay

both hunter and prey

To become what the future

— will choose

Ha! Kurt you have hit it with this one. A pet peeve of mine works that go unread are just like a girl unwed. Nonproductive. Loved it

This is layered and resonant...the girl waiting in cold, the poem resisting edit, both caught “hunter and prey.” The patience, the longing, the uncertainty all fold together. Beautifully written. An excellent metaphor…though of course, only if marriage is seen as the end goal for a girl. For a poem, though, being read IS the end goal. Certainly, being read IS universally the end goal of a poem. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛ Wonderful job, Kurt.

Thanks TR. Love is the end goal for the girl ...

Amen to that! Love is the end goal period! Most welcome, my friend!
