Maestro

FrasMac

Maestro

A single starling

seeking crumbs at people’s feet,

on being noticed,

begins to sing a song so sweet

so captivating,

in many varied tongues of birds

expertly mimicked,

such wonders told in other words.

Oh little Maestro,

you tiny orchestra of one

in speckled feathers,

I see you orchestrate the swarm

in murmuration

across September’s sunset skies!

With grand assurance

your song proclaims a greater prize

of better promise

that from a crumb of trust has grown

to light a candle

whose flame from shore to shore has blown.

Oh brilliant busker,

what power you could not have known

lives in your witness,

your faithful message, now airborne.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I was captivated by the vocal talents of a bold starling who sat not two yards from me begging crumbs. Once he'd had a few he burst into the most astonishing variety of what seemed like mimicked bird song, all streaming from the same small bird.
